Therapy for Children Ages 3-6 Years Old
As a therapist working with families with preschool age children, I work to strengthen the relationship between the child and those who care and love them. I utilize attachment focused interventions that aim to address the effects of trauma, stress, and other adversities on a young child’s mental health and development. My goal is to help caregivers and children build stronger, more nurturing relationships by increasing their understanding of each other’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
I work with both the child and the caregiver in joint sessions to promote positive interactions and communication, address any negative interactions or misunderstandings, and support the caregiver’s ability to provide responsive care.
Overall, my aim is to strengthen the bond between the child and caregiver, promote healthy emotional development, and improve the child’s mental health outcomes by addressing the impact of adverse experiences on the parent-child relationship.
Therapy involves assessment, treatment planning, treatment, and closure. Each session lasts approximately 50 minutes. The therapy sessions often involve activities such as play, drawing, and storytelling to help the child and caregiver communicate and express their emotions. I use techniques such as reflective listening, empathic responding, and promoting affective attunement to support the caregiver’s ability to attune to their child’s emotional needs and provide appropriate responses.
Therapy for Children Ages 7-12 Years Old
When providing therapy to children between the ages of 7-12, I use a variety of approaches depending on the child’s specific needs and presenting issues. However, some general strategies and techniques that I often use in therapy with this age group include:
Play therapy: Children at this age may not have the verbal abilities to express themselves fully, and play can be a way for them to communicate and process their emotions. Play therapy techniques can involve the use of toys, games, art, and other creative activities to help children express their feelings and experiences.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT is an evidence-based therapy approach that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. With children, this may involve teaching them coping strategies to manage their emotions and behaviors in a more adaptive way.
Mindfulness: Mindfulness techniques with children involves teaching children to pay attention to the present moment without judgment, and to cultivate awareness of their thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. It can help children in developing coping skills to manage stress, anxiety, and other emotions.
Family therapy: Family therapy can be helpful for children who are experiencing issues related to family dynamics or relationships. This approach involves working with the child and their family members to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and build stronger relationships.
Narrative therapy: Narrative techniques involves helping children create a narrative or story about their experiences, which can help them make sense of their emotions and experiences. This can also help children develop a sense of agency and control over their lives.
The benefits of therapy with children include improved focus and attention, decreased anxiety and stress, and increased emotional regulation. It can also help children develop self-awareness, self-compassion, and empathy towards others.
Therapy involves assessment, treatment planning, treatment, and closure. Each session lasts approximately 50 minutes. I work towards creating comprehensive plans for a variety of conditions, including anxiety, depression, and trauma. I deliver therapy in a supportive and non-judgmental environment, and adapt to suit the child’s age, developmental level, and needs.
Therapy for Adults
When I work with adults, it typically involves a focus on the unique challenges and stressors that this time of life brings. Common issues addressed in therapy can include anxiety, depression, transitions in life, identity development, career exploration, relationship issues, work stress, and academic stress.
I use a range of evidence-based approaches that are tailored specifically for the needs of the individual. I work with adults helping them identify the challenges that they are facing, how to recognize what is working for them and what is not working, how to develop skills that will help them in their future, and how to implement them to reach the successes they are hoping for.
With adults, I focus on helping identify the challenging negative self-talk and overthinking that can get in the way of living our lives. I focus on the relationships that matter by exploring communication patters within friendships, romantic relationships, work relationships, and family relationships.
